New Electrified Method Captures Carbon Dioxide from Air
February 13, 2026

Ted Sargent, Omar Farha, and collaborators developed a new direct air capture system using reversible surface mineralization to remove CO₂ from air. Powered by electricity and robust under real-world conditions, the approach offers a promising pathway toward scalable, net-negative emissions technologies.
"The paper is the first demonstration of carbon capture using reversible surface mineralization mechanism,” Sargent said. “It’s also a great example of what makes Northwestern such a special place: by working with Professor Omar Farha and his team...Uniting their chemical brilliance with our group’s expertise in electrochemistry and systems, we were able to document a notable advance underpinned by frontier materials chemistry."
