It is with deep sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Sir Fraser Stoddart, a giant in the world of chemistry and a cherished member of our Northwestern community. His loss is profoundly felt, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Fraser’s distinguished career was marked by groundbreaking contributions to organic chemistry, particularly his pioneering work on mechanical bonds, which reshaped our understanding of molecular architecture. Among his many accolades, he shared the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Professors Jean-Pierre Sauvage and Ben Feringa for their development of molecular machines, an achievement that stands as a testament to his visionary approach to science.

Yet, beyond his scientific brilliance, Fraser was an unwavering mentor, a generous colleague, and a steadfast friend. His contributions to our community extended far beyond his research and awards—he uplifted, encouraged, and championed those around him with boundless energy and an open heart. His open-door policy while working in his office was something for all of us to aspire to—a reflection of his deep commitment to fostering dialogue, mentorship, and collaboration.

What set Fraser apart was his humility and empathy. Despite his towering achievements, he remained the farm boy at heart, never thinking or acting as though he was above others, even when he could have easily done so. He had a rare ability to engage with people from all walks of life and at every stage of their careers, always listening with patience and sincerity. I am profoundly grateful for the time he spent talking with me, regardless of the subject.

As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate a life dedicated to discovery, mentorship, and the betterment of humankind. While this newsletter highlights many of the department’s accomplishments from the fall, we also take moments to honor Sir Fraser Stoddart’s lasting impact—reflecting on his scientific contributions, mentorship, and the profound influence he had on our community. Let us carry forward his passion for science, his generosity of spirit, and his relentless curiosity.

We will miss him dearly. May he rest in peace.
