Program Expectations
Second-year students focus on advancing to PhD candidacy through the qualifying exam. This process includes preparing a written research proposal based on their current work and defending it in an oral exam before a faculty committee. At this stage, students are expected to show strong research progress, a solid grasp of their field, and clear communication of their ideas, demonstrating that they are well prepared to advance to PhD candidacy.
