Where are you from, and where did you go to school as an undergraduate?
I'm originally from Nanjing, China. I went to Kalamazoo College for undergraduate studies in 2009.
How did you become interested in your research?
I enjoyed my sophomore organic classes as an undergraduate, therefore I conducted summer research in organic synthesis at both Kalamazoo college and Vanderbilt University in the following summers. My undergraduate research experience confirmed my passion for this field, and inspired me to apply for graduate programs In organic chemistry.
Tells us more about your transition from graduate school to working as a Senior Chemist?
It was a smoother transition than I had expected. As a new employee, most of my work is lab-based, which closely resembles my everyday life at graduate school. However, I did experience a learning curve. The highly collaborative culture of the company allows me to gain exposure to new areas such as patent law, biology, formulation and process development. Almost everything involves teamwork, and I get to interact with colleagues from other functions frequently.
What was the best part about being in the Thomson Group?
I enjoyed spending time with my coworkers both inside and outside of the lab. We support each other and always maintain a great culture within the group. Most importantly, Regan has been a truly understanding and supportive advisor. He gave me freedom to explore different routes, while always being there when I needed guidance. He understood my difficulties as an international student, and provided me support in matters outside of chemistry research. I would definitely join the Thomson group if I were to make the choice again.
What advice would you give to the current graduate students?
Take advantage of the recruiting events at Northwestern. Our department / school have strong connections in numerous industries, which helped me tremendously during my job hunting.
What is your favorite pastime or favorite vacation spot?
I play the violin, go on long scenic drives and explore nature preserves around me.
