Staff Spotlight: Daniel Kim

Daniel Kim, a Program Coordinator who works with international students, joined the Department last summer. Originally from Korea, he has an affinity for helping international students adjust to their new environment.  Daniel plays a key role in supporting graduate students and international scholars when they relocate to the U. S.

Tell us about what you do in your current position in the Department.

I support the graduate and international programs in the Department. That entails consistent communication and coordination with faculty members and researchers in the Department and other NU offices. This includes the WCAS Dean's office, NU International office, Office for Research, and Office of Risk Management.

Before working at Northwestern, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

Although I haven't held any unusual jobs, I helped refugees cross the southern border in Arizona. I conducted intake interviews with refugee detainees at a local detention center in La Palma, Arizona.

What is your proudest accomplishment and why?

I never thought I would find myself in a detention center, but I liked the experience and enjoyed being able to help others. I was able to conduct 3 interviews personally prior to things being shut down due to the pandemic in March 2020.

I am most proud of my travel adventures. I have lived in 3 different states and traveled through a dozen others. I have also lived in 5 different countries and traveled through a dozen others. Currently on my bucket list are South Africa (or the African continent) and Australia.

What is a hobby or activity you do outside of work?

I enjoy biking in Summer and tend to switch to playing video games in the Chicago Winter. I enjoy biking up and down the lake trail from Evanston to downtown Chicago.

What is your favorite vacation spot and why?

San Diego is my all-time favorite travel destination. It's always sunny, and I enjoy getting out on the water. It also reminds me of my hometown on Jeju Island, South Korea due to the weather.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Betty! We recently lost our dog last February. She's been there for us when we needed her the most. She's been the best-est companion we could ever ask for. We are sorry that we haven't always been the best to her but know that we love her and wish her peace. My eyes are wet while I am writing this.
