Staff Spotlight

Greg Mandell is the Program Coordinator supporting Professors Farha, Hupp, and Seideman. Prior to joining Northwestern Chemistry, he worked in the restaurant industry for many years. In his free time, Greg can be found spending time with his wife and two kids.

Tell us about what you do in your current position in the Department?

I joined the Chemistry Department in the summer of 2021 and support Prof. Farha, Prof. Hupp, Prof. Seideman and their Research Groups. I’m also the person you see helping visiting speakers set up their presentations before colloquiums and seminars. I also help maintain the Chemistry Department’s website and take on various other tasks as needed.

Before joining Northwestern, what was the most unconventional or intriguing job you had, and what made it particularly memorable?

Not really a job, but I was in a band for several years. We were the greatest rock show that you never saw. It was interesting to see the backstages and behind the scenes of Chicago and other Midwest venues. We recorded our album at Electrical Audio and watched Cub’s playoff games with Steve Albini during the breaks. Many other stories I’ll tell one day during our reunion tour.

What hobbies, activities, or interests do you have outside of your time at Northwestern Chemistry?

I enjoy listening to podcasts about history, science, quiz shows, and interesting facts. I also love watching old cartoons with my kids. Additionally, I can’t resist dropping at least a dollar into a pinball machine when I see one—the loud, obnoxious noise of a high-score replay is one of my favorite sounds.

What is your favorite vacation spot and why?

My favorite vacation spots are quiet, scenic places with good hiking trails that offer some elevation. I love relaxing and taking in views that give a sense of just how vast the world is.

If you had the opportunity to meet anyone, living or deceased, who would you choose, and what would you hope to learn or discuss with them?

The Marx Brothers (Groucho, Harpo, Chico, Zeppo, and Gummo). They could offer brilliant insights into the world of comedy and share fascinating stories about how they adapted their show from stage to film as the world changed around them. Plus, I imagine it would be a highly entertaining conversation.
