2024 State of the Department images

During the State-of-the-Department Address on 26 January 2024, Chair Teri Odom highlighted unprecedented achievements within the chemistry community. Notable 2023 milestones included a remarkable 30% growth in IMSERC's usage and significant upgrades to lab facilities like Kelley Lab, Sargent Lab, Han Lab, and Gaynor Lab, emphasizing our commitment to interdisciplinary chemical excellence. The completion of state-of-the-art student spaces showcased the Department's dedication to fostering collaborative inspiration. Prof. Odom proudly acknowledged successes among faculty, students, and staff. Finally, the Department’s ongoing commitment to excellence in convergent research was supported by comparing the rankings of Northwestern Chemistry and its reputation with that of competitor schools. The successes of 2023 are the result of the continued efforts of our current department members, building upon the esteemed legacy of our community, which includes alumni, students, staff, and faculty.

INAUGURAL NIC WATKINS AWARD

Nic Watkins Award

In January, we honored the legacy of a beloved community member with the Nic Watkins Memorial Award. Watkins was a dedicated advocate for diversity and inclusion in STEM, leaving a lasting impact on the Department's ethos. Casandra "Clover" Moisanu, a third-year graduate student, was the inaugural recipient and embodies Nic's values through her commitment to inclusive excellence in chemistry. The award recognizes individuals like Clover who exhibit outstanding leadership, mentorship, and advocacy for underrepresented groups.

The Nic Watkins Memorial Award is sponsored by Karen Cahill,  NUBonD, and GoSTEM
