ACS INORGANIC AWARD IN CHEMISTRY
The Department annually invites the recent winner of the ACS Inorganic Award in Chemistry. In April, we were privileged to host the 2021 winner, Kathryn Bowman James, who presented her research on the “Coordination Chemistry of Anions.” Her work expands the structural concepts of transition metal coordination chemistry to include negatively charged ions or anions. Bowman-James is only the second woman to receive the ACS Inorganic Award since its inception in 1962.
2024 Mark Ratner Series of Scholars
The Mark A. Ratner Series of Scholars was created to honor Mark Ratner, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, and his passion for engaging scholars in non-chemistry subjects. This year’s student-selected speaker, Francesca Casadio from the Art Institute of Chicago, uses chemistry concepts and instrumentation in her research at some of the finest art museums around the world. Her lecture on “From Brushstrokes to Breakthroughs: Scientific Research in the Great Art Museums,” was of interest to multiple departments, highlighting cross-disciplinary interactions among attendees from the Departments of Art History, Materials Science and Engineering, and Chemistry.
Faces of Science
Each spring, the graduate student group NUBonD hosts Faces of Science, a two-day event highlighting leading scientists and their unique career journeys into STEM. This year’s speaker was Andre Isaacs from the College of the Holy Cross. Andre is a professor who uses social media platforms to educate viewers about chemistry and is an advocate for diverse representation in STEM labs across the country.
2024 Graduation
Chemistry students and faculty members gathered for a graduation celebration. This year's graduating class included 53 graduate students and 15 undergraduates. The Department honored the students with an awards ceremony and reception, wishing them success in their future endeavors. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2024!
