Assistant Professor of Instruction, Assistant Lab Director of General Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University anticipates hiring an Assistant Professor of Instruction to serve as Assistant Lab Director of General Chemistry (non-tenure track.) The successful candidate will work with the Lab Director to establish an integrated set of learning objectives for the general chemistry laboratory courses; develop inquiry-based experiments and other approaches to improve student learning and persistence in these courses and the corresponding lecture courses; develop or implement valid assessments of student learning in the general chemistry laboratory courses; disseminate work through scholarly publications and lesson plans for internal use. This position will also include teaching assistant training and mentoring, delivering laboratory lectures, and overseeing laboratory sessions.
Applicants should have completed a PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Education, or a related field, have demonstrated excellence in teaching, and have familiarity with emerging pedagogical trends and developments, particularly regarding laboratory learning, issues related to diversity and inclusion, and assessment techniques. The successful candidate must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and be interested in advancing educational innovations to improve persistence of diverse student populations in the STEM disciplines. This position is a continuing faculty position with an initial appointment of two years. It is full time and benefits eligible.
