With great sadness, the department announces the passing of Eberhard Edmund Zwergel, a retired Senior Chemistry Lecturer, on February 10, 2024, at the age of 80. Eberhard dedicated over 30 years to the Northwestern Chemistry community, concluding his service upon his retirement in January 2021.

Eberhard was renowned for his contributions to education, especially for his engaging chemistry demonstrations, and he was awarded the 2004 Weinberg College Community Building Award and listed in College Magazine's top 10 Northwestern professors in 2010. He was popular among students. Eberhard's legacy includes his annual hosting of the Chemistry Halloween Show, last held in 2019. This memorable event combined entertainment and education and showcased his dedication to making science accessible; the show was attended by members of the Department as well as children from neighboring schools.
